You Can't Do That, This Is Malaysia!

Post by Matt

After reading the 29 Ways Towards an LGBTIQ-Friendly Malaysia (and the World) proposed by Seksuality Merdeka, I thought I'd give an outsiders opinion on what I think should be the first step (and was a disappointing 24th on the 29 ways list) that all LGBTIQ people can take to make this (pipe?) dream come true.

I often hear it said that gay liberation will never happen in Malaysia. That sentiment of resignation has come only from gay Malaysians. The rest of the populace simply makes that assumption. I remind them that in the early days of the gay rights movement people in the West faced a much more daunting challenge than Malaysians today.. Violence and harassment by police were routine and the only press available was the one brave citizens printed themselves.

Now, merely 45 years after the first gay rights march in the USA, the only right left to fight for in most Western democracies is the right to marry. Social networks and blogs mean that now everyone can have their voice heard.

I don't want to diminish the task ahead, nor pretend that many difficult choices don't need to be made. But change can happen here. As a foreigner, all I can do is offer moral support and encouragement to the oppressed peoples of this lovely country, as well as suggest tactics you can employ to speed their liberation.

Firstly it must be widely understood that the fight for sexuality rights is not a gay issue. It is not even a religious issue. It is a universal human right. The freedom to love the person of your choice should be available to everyone. Straight people must be convinced that we are fighting for their rights, their children's rights, their whole family's rights. The opposition will try to fool them that they are protecting families. They are not. They, with all the best intentions, are tearing families apart. They must be called on for their misinformed maltreatment of us all, straights included.

Ask a family man what he would think if his son was to tell him that he was actually left-handed but pretended to be right-handed because he was ashamed to admit he was different. Every family man would say it wouldn't matter: he would offer him support and encouragement to use his left hand for anything he wanted.

Being gay is exactly the same. We know we didn't choose to be this way. Who would choose to be something that the rest of society believes is disgusting?

That first difficult step to change people's perception of sexuality rights is for gay men and women to be seen. By that, I mean coming out of the closet to family and understanding friends. This step is bound to scare most of you but it must be done before any meaningful change on a national level can be achieved. You don't have to tell everyone, the gossip mill is highly effective. Over time, many straight people will have heard that you are gay.

I won't gloss over their potential reactions. Some of you will be shunned and disgraced by people who you thought loved you. Others will be tacitly accepted, though misunderstood. Others still will be surprised by the amount of love and acceptance you receive. Nothing great is ever achieved without great risk and though some will be cut off by some family members, all out and proud gay men and women will gain a new family of people who love and accept you for who you are, not what they want you to be.

That family is the gay fraternity, and we are full of love, kindness, support and genuine affection for the downtrodden and abandoned.

If you are convinced that coming out will result in you being ostracised from your family and friends, get in contact with PFLAG Malaysia or Seksualiti Merdeka on Facebook. They are there to help you through the process. There is a fantastic resource of inspiring stories and information about coming out for Asian gay men at http://www.afdenver.net/comingout.php including a section on stories from Malaysians. For our Malay brothers, resources specific to your situation can be found at http://www.afdenver.net/comingoutmuslim.php

There are many personal reasons why coming out is a positive and fulfilling experience for gay men and women. Before you do it, it scares the hell out of you. After the first time you feel a great rush of excitement and the weight of shame lifts off your shoulders. After you've come out to everyone important in your life you will look back on the process as the best thing you have ever done for yourself, regardless of what consequences ensued.

In terms of a national movement for greater sexuality rights, it is essential that as many of you do so as soon as possible. When straight people process the information that gays are people they know and love, the vast majority of them stop hating. Gays stop being a “THEM” and start being a “WE”.

They will stand up for us in conversations with people who are still hating. They'll read about our issues, some will even join the cause. The process of healing the national hate against gay people can begin. The fact remains that we need informed and enlightened straight people on our side. Opinion polls start to flow in our favour then. Once they do, we can step up for a political solution to hating.

Because out and proud gay Malaysians don't get pushed around. Not by the haters. Not by the bullies. NO WAY!

In a future blog entry I will talk about another difficult step necessary for the liberation of all Malaysians from the tyranny of sexuality oppression. To those of you who are inspired to take the first step, don't worry. All the steps to come are, by comparison, much less frightening.

With love and respect

Matt

Toolbox Phrases for Wannabe Barebackers Part 2

(continued from previous post)

A PASSION KILLER

For me, the moment someone asks me to bareback, verbally or physically, is a scary one. The worst-case outcome is that I could get infected with HIV. And I really, truly, deeply don’t want that to happen.

Moreover, if the guy I’m with wants to bareback with me, then he’s certainly barebacked with others before. So suddenly, from having a great time with someone, I’m getting worried.

Maybe this guy is poz.  Maybe he knows he is and is hoping I am. Maybe he doesn't know and is hoping I'm not.

Underground Soundz postcard

Whether he’s poz or not, one thing is clear. He’d rather risk his health and mine to fuck without a condom. To me, that is really a passion killer.

TOOLBOX PHRASES FOR REPEAT SITUATIONS

A wise friend of mine once taught me the concept of ‘toolbox phrases’. Her idea was that some situations are too stressful for you to be able to think on your feet. So you need to think of what those situations might be and prepare a toolbox of phrases that you can reach into.

For me, being with a wannabe barebacker is one of those situations. A situation we all find ourselves in from time to time.  For all the reasons above, it freaks me out, so I’ve developed an option list of toolbox phrases to deal with it.

For those guys who enjoy chem fun, it's even more useful to have figured out your responses in advance, because for obvious reasons, if someone wants to bareback with you when you're high, you're not going to be thinking as clearly as usual. Planning your response ahead of time could literally save you a lifetime of regret. It's my sad observation that ice users tend to bareback more than most and a statistical fact, in the USA at least, that HIV infection rates among ice users are much higher than in the rest of the population. There's no doubt that chem fun really is fun, but having your toolbox phrases ready means you can party and play safely.

Here is a selection of situations and responses from my own experience.

It's handy to have the right  phrase for the right situation

Situation 1.

He’s just indicated, physically or verbally that he doesn’t want to use a condom. My toolbox phrase is something polite but clear like:

‘Sorry, I don’t bareback.’

Sometimes I wonder if I’m too polite. After all, the guy has just indicated he’d rather risk his health and mine than use a condom. That’s not very polite, is it? But heck, I live in Malaysia and safer sex awareness is very poor. I’m an older guy on the scene. Shouldn’t my first instinct be to guide, not scold?

So maybe being polite the first time is OK. The guy has made a request and I’ve said no. If he leaves it there and respects my position we could have a great night ahead of us.

Situation 2

Unfortunately, there are guys out there who can be very persistent. A simple ‘no’ is just not enough. After five minutes the request comes up again, either  verbally or physically. Maybe by rubbing cock to ass without a condom.

‘Don’t worry, I’m just rubbing! I won’t let it go in!’

Heard that before? Before you know it, something is sliding in.

Sometimes they just keep asking, again and again. Nagging or begging.

‘Please, please fuck me,' or, 'Please, let me.’

That really pisses me off. I can’t listen to that all night! It means I have to be constantly vigilant. It’s a total passion killer. So my toolbox phrase is something like one of these:

‘I’m sorry, but I’ve already told you once before that I don’t do that. If that's not OK with you, let's just take a shower and go for some food.'

 or

I’m sorry, but I’ve already told you once before that I don’t do that. If you ask me once again I’m going to have to leave/I’m going to have to ask you to go.’

And I mean it!

Situation 3

Once I was with a bottom who tried to pull the condom off me without me noticing. Once I was with a top who tried the same. They both tried to distract me while removing the condom so we could bareback without me realising.

This is tantamount to rape. It's a crime! It’s trying to get you to do something dangerous you absolutely have not given your consent to, putting you at risk, against your will. The toolbox phrase?

‘Get the fuck OUT of here! Now!’

LOVING YOURSELF

There was certainly a time in my life when the idea of throwing a trick out on the street or leaving someone’s house in disgust because of what they had tried to do was totally appalling to me.

As a young guy I could never do it and consequently I had to endure some quite unpleasant company. Maybe in those days, I didn’t want to give offence. Maybe I didn’t have the money to go home. I can’t think why now.

Nothing is worse than allowing someone to disrespect your clearly stated wishes. Especially if you might end up with a debilitating virus as a result.

WHAT IF I’M POZ ALREADY?

So does this post have any relevance to HIV+ guys or is it just relevant to negative guys who don’t want to get infected? I hope you’re like me. I hope you think it’s relevant to everyone. Positive or negative, I think we have certain responsibilities to ourselves and our partners.
  • ·      If you’re negative, don’t you have a responsibility to protect yourself from infection?
  • ·      If you’re positive, don’t you have a responsibility to protect your partner from infection?

If you don't want to be celibate the only way you can do this is by playing safe - by fucking or getting fucked with a condom.

Or by avoiding anal sex altogether.

GMFA postcard

Don’t let someone bully you into doing otherwise. It’s totally fine to say no to a wannabe barebacker. Figure out some toolbox phrases that suit your way of doing things. You’re worth so much more.

TOOLBOX PHRASES FOR WANNABE BAREBACKERS…

A SURPRISING OFFER

A couple of weeks ago I got clicked by a stunning guy on Gay Romeo. He was tall, handsome and manly. He worked as a model and was, much to my surprise, very keen to meet me. The chat lasted about 40 minutes, messaging back and forth and then, at the point of passing him my address, it all went wrong.
‘Will you raw me?’ he asked.

It was quite a shock. My position on raw sex on my profile is crystal clear. It says:
1)    Unsafe sex: never
2)    I also write explicitly in my bio that I never bareback
3)    I even draw pictures! I have our very own Underground Soundz safer sex images plastered all over it.
My GR profile is very clear. I even draw pictures!

Some people don’t read, I guess. Or understand pictures. Or care.
Well, chatting online is easy to handle. You can type what you like or just ignore the person. What happens when there’s someone in your bed who wants to bareback (fuck without a condom)?

HOW TO CATCH HIV

Let’s talk about HIV infection for a minute. We all know the theory. If you or your partner are positive:
·      If you simply kiss or jerk off you’re never going to pass or catch HIV.
·      If you suck or get sucked, even to the point of coming, you’re almost never going to pass or catch HIV. There’s a slight chance but it’s tiny.
·      If you fuck or get fucked without a condom, there is a high chance that you or your partner will get infected.
We all know that, don’t we? Nearly all HIV infections in gay men come from barebacking. A small proportion of unlucky guys get infected because the condom breaks. A tiny proportion gets infected from oral sex. So fucking or getting fucked are the riskiest things you can do, even with a condom.

IS BAREBACKING OK?

I’m sorry guys, for the most part, I don’t think it is. There are some situations where you can argue for it but there are only a few. Here’s one recommended in the UK by HIV charities.

·      You and your partner have safer sex and decide you want to go raw. You both test for HIV and happily, you both test negative. You continue to play safe for another 3 months, the time it takes for a recent infection of HIV to show up in the blood, then test again. If both of you are still negative after three months it’s safe for you to play raw, so long as you are both monogamous or, if open, you only play safe with others.
A lot of (HIV) poz guys choose to fuck raw with other poz guys. I’m told that on Gay Romeo, people’s profiles that say safer sex ‘needs discussion’, are often poz guys looking for other poz guyz. It’s a clue!
Research suggests that raw poz to poz sex can get you infected with a different strain of HIV, making your overall condition deteriorate faster than it would have. Many guys accept this risk as a payoff for not having to worry about condoms or their status with their partners.
Poz to poz raw sex is even more risky when one partner is on medication, because there is a risk of infecting your partner with a drug resistant strain of HIV.
Poz to poz raw sex is therefore not a healthy choice at all but it is a choice that two adults with the virus may choose to make and I must respect those of my friends who do it. But whichever way I look at it, poz to neg bareback sex  just seems dumb, wicked or crazy!
So how should you react if someone wants to bareback with you?

Catching Up

Hi people,

Sorry for the intermission there...we had two Freedoms in a row and I got a little too busy!

To update you, our Freedom Maydaze party was everything we had hoped for, and less.

Everything, because Aldrin played a superb set of original material with such artistry and style that everyone who heard him was amazed.

Less, because we had  fewer people there than we had hoped for a DJ of his stature.

But I had a great time. As soon as my warm up set was done, I was on that dance floor! I didn't leave it for 2 and 1/2 glorious hours!!

Aldrin and me at the end of the night

On Monday 16 May we had a second Freedom, for Wesak Day Eve. We had arranged it almost as an afterthought; the flyers arriving from the printers the day before Aldrin's set, just in time for us to pass them to people leaving the club. But the night surprised all of us: one of the best, most fun parties we've had.

Part of this was because we'd got this silly idea to have a sci-fi theme. We hired a face painter to create a 'future tribe' feel and people took to the idea right away. It created a wonderful atmosphere for the night. Many thanks to Mellissa Ng for her hard work. She painted faces non-stop for two hours!

Two Future Freedom Fighters!

And for the first time guest DJayPee and I played truly alternative music, an uncompromisingly hard techno set. After Aldrin two weeks previously, why bother with anything else?

We partied till after closing time. Even I left the mixer and danced for the last songs, and I think a fine time was had by all.

Last but not least, the Freedom team has expanded from two to seven. This means that the Freedom concept has also expanded. With seven of us moving things forward we can look forward to a much better and more thoughtful community centred party and blog. Keep tuning in!

The next Freedom will be on June 17. Our last few posts have been all about the party. But as you know, this blog is not just focused just on dance. My next post will be about the community. I've got something to say about barebacking!

See you soon

LIVE DJ SET DOWNLOAD

With only a week to go before our next Freedom, we’d thought we’d upload  a souvenir of the last one. I’ll always remember Freedom Valentine’s Day. It  was a beautiful night for me and clearly a blast for the clubbers who crowded the floor right to the end.

Here’s a cut from the start of the last hour to the final song. The set starts off poppy with Cherry Coke’s hard house remix of ‘Let Me Think About It’  and Riva Starr’s foot-tapping remix of ‘Hey Hey’. From then on it’s a hard banging set of underground tunes, complete with storming Nirvana remix. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Next Sunday, Asia’s most famous DJ, Aldrin from Zouk Singapore takes us to the next level at Freedom Maydaze. With video images from Billy London,  this will be a landmark gay event in Malaysia.

Once I’ve done my warm up set, I won’t be hard to find. Look for me on the dancefloor!

See you there.

INTERVIEW WITH ALDRIN

Hi Freedom lovers,

In case you didn't realise yet from the posts, we have Asia's best known DJ coming to spin at our Freedom Maydaze party.  Aldrin is, quite simply, the biggest name ever to spin at Marketplace, where Freedom is hosted.

From personal experience I know Aldrin loves the company of gay guys but Freedom is his first ever gay gig. The buzz is out there, people are excited - this is a big thing!

Aldrin is something of an inspiration to me. He's a DJ who's totally unafraid to take risks every time he spins, who takes you on a musical journey full of mood changes, ups and downs. His crowd absolutely LOVE him.

Here's an interview from Time Out KL. See you at Freedom!

FREEDOM MAYDAZE LISTING

Saturday 9 April 2011

Creativity is like a drug.

A lot of time, thought and discussion goes into every Freedom party we throw. There's the selection and booking of the guest DJs, ideas for gimmicks such as thumb drive give-aways, plus press releases, printing... you get the idea. The one job that I really look forward to every time is designing the poster and flyer. It's my only creative outlet for the process and one I take very seriously.

We have a few guiding principles when it comes to each design. Firstly, it must have relevance to the holiday the party falls on. Secondly, it must contain a positive message relevant to our community, whether hidden or explicit. Finally, it must leave the viewer thinking “Wow! That looks cool, I wanna go to that!”

So far we've held 4 Freedom parties and our poster designs keep getting better and better. For our first party on Merdeka Eve we used a stencil on wall image of people holding up placards that spelt out FREEDOM. It's a call to action to the gay community to stand up and demand their rights.

For Valentines Day we used an image from the Japanese anime series Dragon Ball Z in which the two main rivals appear to be engaged in a loving embrace. The message of course being that love conquers all. The success of this image has compelled us to use the imagery of anime in all future poster designs.

Today, I thought I'd take the time to tell you a little about the process we went through to create the very striking image for FREEDOM: MAYDAZE. The first thought that came into my head when I began was Soviet Russia and the May Day military parades in Red Square. You know, goose stepping soldiers, enormous rockets and armaments of all kinds... Very homo-erotic, whether or not the politburo were aware of it at the time.

So I started looking for images online that could inspire me. From Soviet propaganda to Mao, I searched high and low. But a lot of what I saw wasn't really speaking to me. The vast majority on offer were of a drawing style more in keeping with the 1950s than present day, with pastel colours I just didn't think would appeal to our community.

After much googling I found this image and was immediately struck by its bold colours and defiant tone. This was more like it. Confident, liberating and inspiring; The hallmarks of Freedom.

The next step was to adapt the image to our needs. We'd just finished working with Vio (an excellent local artist I have no hesitation in recommending) on some safe sex images and commissioned him again to create our Freedom: Maydaze image. What we wanted was an anime style of characters and Vio had proven himself very capable in this respect. He came over with his drawing tablet and I briefed him by saying “Your goal is to create an image that says 'Gay workers of the world unite for FREEDOM'. This is what we came up with.

Satisfied that we had the seed of the image, Vio went away and refined the drawing further, separating the elements and bringing definition to the characters.

To express the diversity of our community we created a businessman, a construction worker and a hairdresser. They seemed like broad enough characters while still maintaining a typically gay identity. To reinforce the “People Like Us” imagery, they were all given identical faces. They stand at attention, defiant, not willing to be pushed around. Inspiring stuff.

Next came the cityscape. Gay men all over the world are attracted to the big cities as it provides us with a form of protection. As Bernadette in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert said, “We all sit around mindlessly slagging off that vile stink-hole of a city. But in its own strange way, it takes care of us. I don't know if that ugly wall of suburbia's been put there to stop them getting in, or us getting out.”

Eventually we felt that having three gay men in the image was not inclusive enough. What about all the women who come to Freedom? From fag hags to lesbians and even straight men (yes, some aren't so freaked out at the idea of being in a gay club). So to broaden our potential market we replaced the business man with a fierce, power suited business woman. After all, Freedom for gay men means freedom for everybody.

Lastly we coloured the image using the same colour palette from the original. Red, yellow, black and white. Bold, high contrast colours that leap out at you. You simply can't ignore it. A few tweaks like adding searchlights and it was ready for typesetting.

In keeping with the Soviet theme we used a font called Kremlin that has the effect of making English letters look more like Russian letters. Recognising that it could be difficult to read the smaller print, we flipped over the Rs and used a different N in the information at the bottom. You can see the result of our labours at the top of this blog.
The posters are plastered all around Marketplace now and flyers will be distributed around the regular spots in the coming weeks.

It's a great joy to create these images for Freedom. It gives us a platform for expressing our ideas and providing a little bit of inspiration to our community. They make our parties distinct and thought provoking, not merely a place to pick up a shag for the night (though that is not discouraged). It sure beats the glitter, sequence and stiletto images our community is usually saddled with. One things for sure, when you see a Freedom poster you know the party is going to be different, unique and above all, special.
See you at Freedom: Maydaze

Someone to Watch Over Me

Hi Peeps,
For those of you who've only recently started following this blog, we're a music blog with a queer heart. One of our aims is to promote better dance music. Another is to promote safer behaviour among our party-goers. Safer behaviour includes safer sex and making informed choices about alcohol and recreational drugs.

At the last Freedom party we gave away  thumb drives to the first fifty guests, loaded with DJ mixsets, safer sex videos and our very own creations, our three safer sex postcards. You can read the backstory to that and view the postcard designs in my March post 'Chem Fun'. That post has had more hits in more countries than anything else I've written, so I guess it has been well received.

Here is one of the safer sex videos from the thumb drive for you to watch. It's from Japan and clearly speaks to an Asian audience. A  transgender geisha goddess watches over a city at night to make sure all the boys can choose to play safe. Check out the sexy Taiko drummer...much hotter than the one pictured above!

I'll keep this post short and sweet and let the video speak for itself!

Enjoy!

Things to come

Hi Freedom Lovers,
We've got some great musical events coming up soon.

On Saturday April 16th I'll be spinning at Sky Bar, on top of Traders Hotel. The night is called Return to the House. More on this later...

More excitingly, we have our next Freedom party coming up at Marketplace.  This will be the first Freedom I've been to when I'm not the main DJ. I can't wait.!

Partly because Freedom is the best party in town and I want to be able to enjoy it like everyone else. And partly because this time we have a world class DJ as the main act. This is Aldrin, who's famous for his sets in London, Ibiza, Tokyo, New York and his home town Singapore. He's Asia's biggest DJ, playing to 18,000 people at Zouk Out in Singapore last December. And we've got him spinning for us in our little club in KL! I can't quite believe our luck!

Next stop, Marketplace!

I'm afraid I can't disclose how many people I had to sleep with and how many parties I had to attend to be able to swing this but believe me, it took some doing! The big league is coming to Marketplace!

To tell you more about all of this, I'd like to introduce my pal Matt. Matt is the brains behind this Freedom Underground Soundz operation. I play the music, he creates the concepts. He's going to be a regular contributor here on this blog and I'm looking forward to that too.

Oran and Matt ponder the imponderable

See you on the dancefloor!

Beatport Seventh Annual Music Awards

Hi Peeps,
You may not be familiar with Beatport. It's an American DJ portal and arguably the most influential electronic dance music site for DJs in the world.

Although they have a huge catalogue of songs for download, if you go there and look up Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson or Lady Gaga, you'll draw a blank. That's not what they're about.

Beatport specialises in the kind of music I love. Probably 75% of my playlist comes from stuff I've found here. The site is divided into genres and each genre has its own chart. The streaming is really fast and you can get a good two minute sample of any song. What's more, there's a great free Iphone app for Beatport which lets me shop for songs even when I'm on the go.

You can find the site at

And the app is in the Itunes store under Beatport.

Beatport have just celebrated their Seventh Annual Beatport Music Awards. Top tracks by genre were determined entirely by sales. These were the tunes that Beatport's community singled out as the most important, far-reaching tracks of the year. They also created a new award, Beatport Breakthrough Artist, to recognize the top-selling artist who was new to Beatport in 2010.

I've added their newsletter to this post so you can get a feel of where the worldwide DJ community's head is at.

For those who are unsure,  Deadmau5 is pronounced Deadmouse! Maybe I'll get a chance to spin One by Swedish House Mafia at the next Freedom party.

I'd like to finish this post with a hats off to Lady Gaga, whose Born This Way single was recently banned on Malaysian Radio. Her dignified and articulate response to this earned my respect. She's a very talented artist and clearly, a very clever and focused woman. I just wish people didn't overplay her in clubs!
